Emotional Problems

Adolescents and adults with untreated AD/HD are prone to emotional instability, which complicates their lives and result in a variety of problems, such as:

  • Low self esteem
  • Depression (often leading to suicide)
  • Anxiety Disorder
  • Mood Disorders
  • Relationship problems
  • Increased conflict at home between parents and/or siblings
  • Difficulties with peers and/or colleagues
  • Lack of, or poor, development of social skills
  • Higher rates of maritial difficulties and/or divorce

It is noteworthy that ADHD is often one of the first causes of depression and often implicated in instances of suicide. Because of this, psychiatrists must develop an in-depth knowledge of AD/HD in order to thoroughly understand the issues surrounding the presenting symptomatology.
